Hi everyone! I hope you are all well and having an amazing day. As you will have seen on my blog, due to my reading 20+ books a month I have been incorporating my reviews into a Recent Reads post, as it would take me forever to do in depth reviews. While I will still be doing this going foreard, I recently read VE Schwab’s A Darker Shade of Magic trilogy and I just had so many thoughts I knew I had to do a full review of the last book, A Conjuring of Light. This series has become one of my all time favourites, and I can’t wait to tell you all why!

Straight after finishing this book, I was literally at the point where I just have no words to describe how much I loved this series. If you think about how the story started I would’ve had no idea hat it would go in the direction it did. The story picks up right where we left off on that massive cliffhanger and it was so fast paced, it set my pulse through the roof! The pacing of this section was some of the fastest I’ve ever read – even with the chapters taking a more political / strategical side it still moved really quickly. One thing I loved about the plot of this book (and the series in general) is that there’s literally nothing you can predict or expect. This is a worl we still don’t know everything about, and the little reveals mean the story goes through some unpredictable twists e.g. characters coming back from the dead. I loved the villain driving the plot, as you can completely understand his motives (which I love in an antagonist).

By far the highlight for these books for me were the characters, and their relationships. I absolutely love how much Kell and Lila complement each other – they’re complete opposites in some ways but are so similar in others. I was thinking this in the second book but I didn’t want to jump the gun, but i’m going to say it now… Kell & Rhy’s dynamic really reminded me of Will & Jem from the Infernal Devices series! That’s a testament to how amazing their relationship was written, as that is the best brother relationship I’ve read so far. These brothers would honestly do anything for each other and every scene with them together simultaneously broke and mended my heart. The last scene made me bawl like a baby! Rhy & Alucard’s dynamic I did not see coming at all but I was so happy with how it ended for them too! Also I can’t talk about relationship dynamics and not mention Kell and Alucard. Honestly their conversations were absolutely hilarious and just the break we needed from all of the horrible stuff going on in the story.

Not only was I absolutely obsessed with the characters and their relationships, but we NEED to talk about their arcs. HOLLAND! Somehow I have no words and so many words at the same time. He is honestly my favourite type of character – morally grey, you can understand his motives, as well as being good/evil depending on perspective. From just a thorn in Kell’s side in the first book he became one of my favourite parts of the story, and I loved that we got to see flashbacks into his past to help us realise why he is the way he is. Not only Holland, but Rhy’s character arc as well!? Throughout this series he turned into what we originally assumed was a spoilt prince who didn’t really have a care in the world to this fully developed leader with empathy, bravery and a whole other spectrum of emotion! I love that he also kept his vulnerability and kindness through the number of horrific trials VE Schwab put him through!

Overall I thought this was an amazing finale. I’m so happy with how it ended but also incredibly sad to say goodbye to these characters that I’ve absolutely fallen in love with. I loved this series so much I’ve broken my bank account and purchased the signed collector’s editions, and will no doubt reread them very often.

Have you read the ADSOM series? Did you love it as much as I did? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Happy reading,
Lucy
